Mary Ann Staight 1849

Robert Pulley was executed at 49 years of age for the murder of Mary Ann Staight in Broughton, Pershore. He was hung at Worcester Gaol in what is now Castle Street. According to the newspaper report of the execution, a cast of his head was taken afterwards, so he could be one of the heads that are kept at the Medical Museum! His case prompted calls for the abolition of the death penalty.

If This Happened Today

Would get a mandatory life sentence for murder if found guilty today. However, the evidence in this case seems circumstantial. Modern forensic DNA evidence would settle the matter beyond doubt.
